The world's largest shield advancing into the Shanghai Yangtze River "South Tunnel" project

Recently, the world's largest tunnel shield "Changjiang No. 1" took the first step of the cross-river journey and began to advance to Shanghai Changxing Island. The "South Tunnel" project of the Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge Project was fully launched.

“Changjiang No.1” will cross the Yangtze River South Port waters, about 8.9 kilometers long, and create a series of projects “the most”: the shield tunneling 7.5 kilometers at a time, is the longest continuous construction of the shield in the world; The inner diameter of the tunnel is about 13.7 meters, the outer diameter is about 15 meters, and the diameter of the shield machine is 15.43 meters. It is the largest shield tunnel in the world. The maximum buried depth of the project at the highest historical water level is about 55 meters, and there are 8 bypass channels on the whole line.

The Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge Project with a total investment of about 12.6 billion yuan adopts the "South Tunnel North Bridge" program. The 8.9-kilometer "South Tunnel" passes through the Pudong No. 5 Ditch through the Yangtze River Nangang waters to Changxing Island, 10.3 km. The "North Bridge" then crossed the Yangtze River North Port waters from Changxing Island and arrived in Chongming.

In 2010, the 25.5-kilometer Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel Bridge will be completed and opened to traffic, and the entire line will be designed according to the six-lane expressway. After the completion of the project, Shanghai residents can take a 40-minute drive from the city center to Chongming without going on a boat. It is understood that the Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge Project has also reserved construction space for future rail transit lines.
