Auto Parts Short Board Control “Wuhan Made”

Wuhan has sparked widespread debate across various sectors in recent discussions about its status as China's "third automobile city." In an interview with reporters, industry professionals involved in auto exhibitions, research, and used car markets generally believe that Wuhan has earned the title through years of development and comparisons with international standards. However, some experts remain skeptical, questioning whether Wuhan can truly claim to be the "third city" in China’s automotive landscape. From a production standpoint, Wuhan has shown strong potential to become the third major automobile hub in the country. Xia Hongwu from the Jiangxi University Automotive Research Institute stated clearly: “From the perspective of整车 (complete vehicles), Wuhan has both the conditions and capabilities to become the third automobile city.” This is reflected in the nationwide reach of Wuhan-made vehicles. In 2007, Wuhan produced 625,000 vehicles, and by 2010, the total production capacity of local manufacturers had exceeded 1.5 million units. Popular models such as Fukang, Elysee, Dongfeng Citroen Triumph, Dongfeng Peugeot 206 and 307, as well as Dongfeng Honda CR-V and Civic, have found their way into households across the country. Zhang Lu, president of the Hubei Provincial Exhibition and Convention Industry Chamber of Commerce, who has participated in major auto shows across China, remarked: “In our view, Wuhan should have long been the third automobile city. It is natural for Wuhan to take this position in China’s auto industry.” He pointed out that Wuhan’s market environment and resources make it well-suited to lead in the sector. While Guangzhou benefits from Japanese brands like Toyota, Honda, and Nissan, Wuhan has a stronger presence in commercial vehicles, which gives it an edge over both Guangzhou and Beijing. Despite these achievements, there are still challenges to overcome. Xia Hongwu expressed concerns about the parts and components industry in Wuhan, stating: “At this stage, we cannot yet fully say that Wuhan is the third-largest automobile city in China. The parts industry remains a weak link, and in the coming years, Wuhan must strengthen its development in this area.” A recent report highlighted that while Wuhan has established a national export base for auto parts, local companies have not kept up with the overall growth. For example, in the Hanyang Economic Development Zone, major automakers like Shenlong and Dongfeng Honda purchase over 20 billion yuan worth of parts annually. However, among more than 120 local suppliers, few have managed to integrate into the supply chain. The Development Zone Management Committee described the issue as “unreasonable supply-demand structure and information asymmetry.” A manager at a local parts company warned: “The main advantage of domestic parts suppliers is low cost. But when foreign firms enter the mainland with better quality and competitive pricing, many local companies will struggle to survive.” Jia Xingguang, a domestic automotive expert, noted that while Dongfeng has manufacturing facilities in Wuhan, Shiyan, and Xiangfan, as well as in other provinces like Guangxi, Xinjiang, and Guangdong, it may be premature to label Wuhan as China’s third motor city. Still, the city’s growing influence in the automotive industry continues to attract attention and discussion.
