Sinopec dominates Taiwan's FCC catalyst market
Sinopec Catalyst Branch has once again secured a 5,000-ton contract for fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts in Taiwan, marking the fourth consecutive win in this market. This achievement confirms the company's strong presence and dominance in the local FCC catalyst sector. Over the years, the catalyst branch has made significant efforts to expand its overseas footprint, focusing on business principles, product quality, and technical support to enhance its marketing effectiveness.
Taiwan's market is dominated by two major oil companies, with China National Petroleum Corporation (CPC) being one of the largest, processing around 5 million tons annually and consuming approximately 6,500 tons of FCC catalysts each year. In February 2003, Changling Catalyst Plant—now known as Changling Branch—received a copy of CPC’s bidding specifications. Seizing the opportunity, the team actively communicated with CPC through faxes and phone calls, eventually earning an invitation to participate in the bid after a month of persistent effort.
In April 2003, Changling received formal tender documents from CPC, allowing it to enter the Taiwan market for the first time. A dedicated technical development team was formed to research and produce products tailored to CPC’s requirements. Their solution won the top prize in the technical evaluation, and after analyzing past competitors and pricing trends, they outperformed global rivals in July, securing a 2003–2004 contract worth over 5,000 tons.
After-sales service plays a crucial role in the company’s brand strategy. Despite challenges posed by the cross-strait divide, which limits service frequency compared to Western firms, Sinopec Catalyst continuously improves service quality and adopts remote support solutions. To address gaps in FCC research in Taiwan, the company regularly exchanges knowledge with CPC on advanced theories, industry practices, and experiences from mainland refineries. In April 2006, the head of the catalyst branch led a team to Taiwan for on-site visits and discussions, gathering user feedback and ensuring seamless pre-sale, sales, and after-sales support, further strengthening the partnership.
Over the past three years, Sinopec Catalyst’s high-quality products and exceptional service have earned strong recognition from CPC. In the latest tender, the company competed against several global giants, ultimately winning the bid thanks to superior product quality, advanced technical support, and a powerful brand reputation. This success underscores the company’s growing influence and reliability in the international market.
