House fire in Buffalo Grove, 9-9-17

On Saturday morning, September 9, 2017, just before 6:30 a.m., Buffalo Grove police and fire units responded to a report of smoke coming from a home at 96 University Drive. The call came after a passerby noticed smoke billowing from the property. Police officers arrived first and began knocking on the doors and ringing the doorbell in an attempt to wake the homeowners. Moments later, Arlington Heights Engine 4 and Buffalo Grove Tower 25 arrived on the scene. Firefighters quickly stretched a hose line to the front entrance and made entry into the house. Smoke was visible from the second floor, and thick smoke filled the first floor as well. As the front door was breached, heavy smoke pushed out, indicating the fire was already well-developed inside. The incident was upgraded to a Code 4 working fire, and two additional ambulances were dispatched to the scene after it was reported that three people might be inside the home. Despite the urgency, firefighters later confirmed that no humans were present. Neighbors informed the police that the cars in the driveway did not belong to the homeowners, and the family's car was missing. A thorough search revealed that only two cats were inside the house. Firefighters attempted to resuscitate the cats, but they did not survive. The fire caused significant damage to the structure, and crews worked for several hours to fully extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. More photos from the scene are available at Shapirophotography.net.
