The new Mercedes-Benz turbocharged engine will be launched soon.

China's first domestically developed turbocharged engine, boasting full intellectual property rights, was recently unveiled at Brilliance Automotive. During the engine launch event, Yu Yumin, Chairman and President of Huachen Automobile, announced that Zunchi models equipped with Brilliance's 1.8T series engines are set to hit the market in the second half of this year, with an annual production target of 5,000 units. Additionally, the 1.8T engine is also expected to be used in the "Rover 75" model currently under development by SAIC Motor. The Brilliance 1.8T series engine was developed in collaboration with FEV, a renowned German engine research institution, over a three-year period. This all-aluminum, high-performance compact engine cost 1.13 billion yuan to develop. It meets Euro III emission standards, maintains fuel efficiency comparable to similar displacement engines, yet delivers a power increase of 30% to 100%. According to Yu Yumin, the 1.8T engine marks just the beginning of Brilliance’s core technology upgrade plan. Currently, apart from the unlisted 1.8TAT premium model, other Brilliance Junjie models still use Mitsubishi engines. With the mass production of the 1.8T engine, Brilliance plans to gradually introduce 1.6L to 2.0L engines across its lineup. Eventually, all Junjie models will be powered by Brilliance-made engines, replacing the previously used Mitsubishi units. Once integrated into the Brilliance and Junjie brands, the company aims to develop four base gasoline engines—1.6L, 1.8L, 1.8T, and 2.0L—on this platform, with various derivatives tailored for different vehicle needs. For years, China’s auto industry has struggled with reliance on foreign technologies. The successful development of the Brilliance engine is seen as a step toward reversing this trend. While brands like Chery and Geely have not focused on the mid- to high-end market, they have built strong engine capabilities in lower-tier models. For instance, Geely’s own engines now account for 70% of its total production. At yesterday’s launch ceremony, Yu Yumin expressed confidence, stating, “The commissioning of the 1.8T engine signifies that China’s automotive industry has entered a powerful era, ready to compete with global giants for a stronger position in the market.”
