Liaohe Oilfield has made significant progress in its major technological research on SAGD (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage) technology. Among the ancillary technologies, particularly the lifting system technology, substantial breakthroughs have been achieved. The serialization of related products has now entered the stage of practical application, with positive results observed. These developments are expected to replace imported foreign products, providing strong support for the implementation of SAGD technology. This marks a milestone, as Liaohe Oilfield will now rely on its own developed technology and products for SAGD lifting systems.
It is reported that Liaohe Oilfield started testing SAGD technology in 2004 at the Du 84 block, achieving remarkable results and continuous improvements. However, key components of the supporting system—such as oil pumps, polished rod sealers, and detachable lifting devices—were still imported from abroad. The high cost of imported pumps significantly increased the implementation expenses of SAGD technology, and once it becomes fully mature, it could lead to long-term production challenges due to high maintenance costs.
To address these issues, Liaohe Oilfield assigned the task of independently developing SAGD pump lifting system technology and related products to the Drilling Technology Research Institute. Researchers conducted systematic studies, optimized parameters, selected suitable materials, and designed two types of pumps: a general-purpose pump and a large-capacity pump. Using self-developed special manufacturing processes, they successfully created two new pump models.
Both pump models have shown excellent performance during initial field tests of SAGD applications. Currently, the technology has been tested in nine horizontal wells, with four of them operating continuously for over four months. The performance is comparable to that of foreign-made equipment, with similar machining accuracy.
According to reports, once this technology and its related products are fully developed and applied on a large scale, they will significantly reduce production costs for Liaohe Oilfield, making SAGD operations more efficient and economically viable. This achievement not only enhances the oilfield’s technical independence but also strengthens its position in the global energy market.
