One particularly inspiring story comes from LAIKA’s work on “Missing Link,†a film that beautifully combines traditional stop-motion animation with modern CGI techniques. Brian McLean, Director of Rapid Prototyping at LAIKA, shared insights into the innovative process behind this masterpiece: “For ‘Missing Link,’ we used Maya to rig and animate the characters’ facial performances. Each facial expression was exported as an OBJ file, voxelized, and then sliced for 3D printing using software called Cuttlefish from Fraunhofer IGD to maintain color accuracy. Ultimately, over 106,000 unique faces were printed throughout the production. Some scenes required up to 24 different expressions per second, with certain characters having tens of thousands of individual face prints.â€
Managing such a massive amount of assets was equally challenging. As Steve Emerson, Visual Effects Supervisor at LAIKA, explained, “Shot assignments, schedules, plate information, and reference materials were all published and organized using Shotgun Software. We’ve been using Shotgun on every LAIKA project since ‘ParaNorman.’†This meticulous approach ensured that every detail was accounted for during production.
The results speak for themselves. “Missing Link†received critical acclaim, winning Best Animated Feature at the Golden Globes and earning Outstanding Visual Effects and Outstanding Character awards at the VES Awards. It’s a testament to the creativity and technical prowess of LAIKA’s team, who successfully blended tradition with innovation to deliver something truly special.
