Award season is here again, and this year's finest films are getting their due recognition at the Oscars, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Annies, and Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards. From intergalactic space adventures to breathtaking wildlife documentaries set against the African savanna, Autodesk tools have been instrumental in helping teams around the globe collaborate and create stunning visuals for some of the most celebrated VFX and animated films. In fact, it’s the 25th straight year that our Media & Entertainment solutions have played a pivotal role in Academy Award-nominated films within the VFX and animation categories.
This year’s nominees showcase exceptional talent and innovation, with renowned studios like Animal Logic, Cinesite, Company 3, Digital Domain, DreamWorks Animation, Framestore, ILM, LAIKA, Method Studios, MPC, Sony Pictures Imageworks, SPA Studios, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Weta Digital among those receiving accolades. These studios relied on Autodesk tools such as Maya, Arnold, Shotgun, and Flame to bring their visions to life.
One of the standout projects supported by Autodesk tools is LAIKA’s work on “Missing Link.†This film exemplifies the incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into creating its unique stop-motion aesthetic. Brian McLean, Director of Rapid Prototyping at LAIKA, explained the innovative process: “For ‘Missing Link,’ we rigged and animated the characters’ facial performances in Maya, exporting each expression as an OBJ file. These were then voxelized, sliced for 3D printing using Cuttlefish software from Fraunhofer IGD to maintain color accuracy, and printed on a Stratasys color 3D printer. Over 106,000 unique faces were produced for the film. Some scenes required up to 24 distinct expressions per second, with Lionel alone featuring more than 39,000 faces, and Link having 27,000.â€
Managing all these assets was no small feat. Steve Emerson, Visual Effects Supervisor at LAIKA, noted, “Shot assignments, schedules, plate information, and references were published and organized using Shotgun Software, which we’ve utilized since ‘ParaNorman.’â€
Their efforts paid off handsomely, as “Missing Link†won Best Animated Feature at the Golden Globes and Outstanding Visual Effects and Outstanding Character in an Animated Feature at the VES Awards. This project is just one example of how our customers are constantly pushing creative boundaries with Autodesk tools. A huge congratulations to everyone involved in creating these remarkable films! We’re excited to see what new wonders you’ll bring to the screen in 2020 and beyond!
