Mokena Fire Protection District news

**Excerpts from the Patch:** I just got back from the Mokena Village Board meeting, where it was truly heartwarming to see how they honored their outgoing Fire Chief, Howard Stephens. It was such a touching moment when the board issued an official proclamation to recognize his incredible contributions over the years. Stephens is set to officially retire on November 30th, and it felt like the whole community came together to celebrate him. The image of Chief Stephens really brought back memories—he’s been such a staple in this town since the early '90s. As I sat there listening, I couldn’t help but think about how far he's come. He started out as a paid-on-call firefighter back in 1991, which is almost hard to believe now that he’s stepping down as the fire chief. The transformation from those humble beginnings to becoming the leader of the Mokena Fire Protection District is nothing short of inspiring. He was one of the first six full-time firefighters ever hired by the district in 1995, and within the same year, he was promoted to lieutenant. Just five years later, in 2002, he climbed even higher up the ranks, becoming the assistant fire chief and deputy administrator. Then, in 2012, he was appointed fire chief, a position he’s held ever since. As if his professional journey wasn’t impressive enough, Stephens has also dedicated himself to serving the broader community through various roles. He’s been vice chair of the Will County Emergency Telephone Services Board, president of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division 19, and a key player on the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association conference committee. Currently, he’s still actively involved as the vice president of the Mokena Lions Club. His commitment to public service goes beyond firefighting—it’s woven into everything he does. What struck me most during the ceremony was the glowing praise from the proclamation itself. It described Stephens as leaving behind a legacy of “compassionate leadership, strong organizational structures, a culture of advocacy for all stakeholders, and outstanding physical resources.” Those words perfectly encapsulate the kind of person he is—someone who not only leads with strength but also cares deeply about everyone around him. His impact will continue to be felt long after he steps down. It was a bittersweet evening, knowing that we’ll soon have a new face at the helm, but it was also a celebration of what Howard Stephens has achieved. I left feeling proud to live in a place where leaders like him are valued and celebrated. It makes you realize how lucky we are to have people like Howard Stephens make such a difference in our lives.
