Landmark building burns in Lyons, 11-22-13
From The Chicago Tribune:
A historic Chamber of Commerce building in west suburban Lyons, once a well-known landmark, suffered major damage in a fire that broke out overnight, according to local officials.
The blaze started around 2:30 a.m. at the two-story structure located at 3901 Joliet Ave. Firefighters managed to bring the flames under control by 6 a.m., but not before significant destruction occurred.
Fire Chief Gordon Nord told reporters that when crews arrived, flames were already shooting from the first-floor windows. “It was overwhelming. We had to pull everyone out and switch to a defensive strategy,†he said.
Nord confirmed that the building is beyond repair and will need to be demolished.
From CBS Chicago:
No one was injured in a fierce fire that swept through a vacant building in Lyons early Friday morning, but the blaze left behind a devastating scene — including the destruction of one of the town’s most iconic landmarks.
The Lyon’s Chamber of Commerce building at 3901 Joliet Ave. caught fire just after 2:30 a.m. The two-story, ivory-colored structure, built in the early 1900s, was known for its ornate doorways and castle-like towers. Though it had been empty for years, it remained a cherished part of the community.
Although the building still had electricity, gas service had been disconnected for some time, according to Fire Chief Gordon Nord. It took firefighters nearly four hours to fully extinguish the fire.
“We saw heavy fire coming from the first-floor windows. There was a lot of intense heat and smoke in the tin ceiling, which created a lot of voids and made the situation very challenging,†Nord explained. “We had to pull everyone back and go on the defensive.â€
During the fire, the top of one of the building’s turret-like structures collapsed. As of early Friday, the cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the damage was so severe that the structure will have to be torn down.
No injuries were reported, but the loss of this historic building has left many residents in shock and sadness.
