Chicago Still & Box Alarm 12-9-12

This is from Eric Haak: Early Sunday morning, a fire broke out in an occupied apartment building located at 2715 E. 75th Place. Shortly before 0500 hours, Engine 126 and Truck 49 arrived on scene and reported flames coming from the second floor of the 25X75, two-story ordinary construction building. The structure consisted of two attached, side-by-side two-flats, with the fire initially confined to the eastern unit. At 0511, the 23rd Battalion upgraded the incident to a Still & Box due to the fire spreading through a void in the drop ceiling and threatening both units. Firefighters initially evacuated the building but made a second attempt to contain the blaze and prevent it from engulfing the entire structure. By 0530, the situation had escalated so much that companies switched to a defensive position as interior operations were not making significant progress. Engine 126 and Truck 49 were pulled from the front of the building, and Squad 5’s snorkel was deployed as flames spread into the cockloft of both units. The fire was eventually brought under control around 0640.
