Air source heat pump floor heating technology in residential applications in residential projects Case Study
The project involved an initial investment of 21,960 yuan. This system is ideal for mid-to-high-end residential properties and villas in economically developed cities, especially in coastal areas where environmental protection is a key concern. These regions present a large market opportunity due to growing demand for sustainable and efficient heating solutions.
In 2004, a 122 m² housing unit purchased by staff from the Beijing Academy of Armored Force Engineering in Chang'an New City chose to install an air-source heat pump floor heating system, model Solan FRS-12D. The actual equipment cost was 21,960 yuan, with an additional investment of 3,660 yuan. After one heating season, the system consumed 2,460 kWh of electricity. At a rate of 0.48 yuan per kWh, this generated annual benefits of 1,180.8 yuan. The extra investment could be recovered within 3.1 heating periods. Additionally, the system reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 706.02 kg annually.
The investment recovery period for this project is approximately 3.1 heating seasons. The case study comes from the monitoring unit of Beijing Armed Forces Academy of Engineering and the Heilongjiang Province Energy Conservation Monitoring Center. The predecessor of the Armored Force Engineering Institute was established in 1953 as the Military Academy of Armored Force Engineering Department. In 1961, it became the basis for the establishment of the Armored Force Engineering College in Xi'an. It later moved to Beijing in 1969 and is now part of the General Armament Department, recognized as one of the key institutions in military education.
Chang’an New City is a large-scale residential community located on the southern bank of Chang’an Avenue in Beijing. It spans 47.3 hectares with a total construction area of about 1 million square meters. It is one of the largest economic housing areas in western Beijing. Many employees of the Armored Force Engineering College have installed air-source heat pump floor heating systems in their homes.
This system works by extracting heat from the air using an air-source heat pump, which then heats the floor through a radiant heating system. The process involves circulating hot water through pipes embedded in the floor, radiating warmth evenly throughout the room. This method provides a clean, energy-efficient, and comfortable heating solution.
The system consists of two main parts: the air-source heat pump unit and the low-temperature radiant floor heating system. The heat pump has an outdoor and indoor unit, preventing freezing and damage during winter. The indoor system uses water as a heat carrier, reducing refrigerant leakage risks and ensuring safety. The compressor is placed outdoors, minimizing noise levels.
Radiant floor heating operates by distributing low-temperature hot water through pipes laid beneath the floor. Heat is transferred via radiation, creating a comfortable and even temperature distribution. The system includes a reinforced concrete base, thermal insulation layer, and aluminum-plastic composite pipes.
Key features of the technology include its ability to operate efficiently in low-temperature environments, combined with low-temperature radiant heating. The split design and modular structure make it easy to install and maintain, while the intelligent control system allows for precise temperature regulation and scheduling.
During a heating season of 120 days, data from two identical 122 m² houses showed that the air-source heat pump + floor radiant heating system used 2,055 kWh of electricity, costing 986.4 yuan. In comparison, electric heating film usage reached 4,515 kWh, costing 2,167.2 yuan. The former saved 1,180.8 yuan annually. It also reduced CO₂ emissions by 706.02 kg. Since it uses electricity and extracts heat from the air, it does not produce air pollution, making it a clean and safe heating option.
In economically developed regions, real estate development increasingly focuses on energy efficiency, environmental protection, and integrated heating and cooling systems. Air-source heat pump systems have been tested in various cold regions and are proving to be a viable and sustainable solution. They have been implemented in cities like Dalian, Anshan, Beijing, Tianjin, Jinan, Wuhan, and Qingdao. Some venues of the 2008 Beijing Olympics also use this technology, highlighting its potential.
Shenyang, located in a colder northern region, still has significant room for growth. The system's performance in cold climates demonstrates its feasibility and potential for wider adoption. As more people seek eco-friendly and cost-effective heating solutions, air-source heat pump technology is likely to gain greater traction in the future.
