Air source heat pump floor heating technology in residential applications in residential projects Case Study

This system is ideal for mid-to-high-end residential properties and villas in economically developed cities, especially those with a strong focus on environmental protection. In 2004, a staff member from the Beijing Academy of Armored Force Engineering purchased a 122 m² home in Chang'an New City and installed an air-source heat pump floor heating system, model Solan FRS-12D. The total equipment cost was 21,960 yuan, with an additional 3,660 yuan invested in the system. After one heating season, the system consumed 2,460 kWh of electricity. At a rate of 0.48 yuan per kWh, this generated annual benefits of 1,180.8 yuan. With a heating period of about 3.1 months, the additional investment could be recovered within that time frame. Additionally, the system reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 706.02 kg annually.
The investment recovery period for the project is approximately 3.1 heating periods. This case was monitored by the Heilongjiang Province Energy Conservation Monitoring Center and involved a housing unit of the Armed Forces Engineering College. The college itself has a long history, originally established in 1953 as the Military Academy of Armored Force Engineering. It later became the Armored Force Engineering College in Xi'an in 1961, and moved to Beijing in 1969. The institution is part of the General Armament Department and is recognized as a key university in China's military education system.
Chang’an New City is a large residential community located on the southern bank of Chang’an Avenue in Beijing. It spans 47.3 hectares and includes over 1 million square meters of construction. It is one of the largest economically viable residential areas in western Beijing. Many employees of the Armed Forces Engineering College have chosen to install air-source heat pump floor heating systems in their homes.
The air-source heat pump floor heating system operates by extracting heat from the air in winter and distributing it through floor heating pipes. This creates a comfortable, radiant heating effect without the need for traditional heating methods. The system consists of two main parts: the air-source heat pump unit and the low-temperature radiant floor heating system.
The heat pump unit is split into outdoor and indoor components, which helps prevent freezing and damage during cold weather. The indoor system uses water as a heat transfer medium, making it safer and more efficient while reducing refrigerant leakage. The compressor is placed outdoors, resulting in lower noise levels.
The low-temperature radiant floor heating system works by circulating hot water through pipes embedded in the floor. This method provides even and consistent warmth, improving comfort while using less energy. The system includes a reinforced concrete base, an insulation layer, and aluminum-plastic composite pipes covered with concrete.
This technology is particularly effective in low-temperature environments and combines well with radiant floor heating to significantly improve efficiency. Its modular design allows for easy installation and maintenance, and it features intelligent control with room-specific temperature settings.
During a heating season of 120 days, data from two identical 122 m² homes showed that the air-source heat pump + floor heating system used 2,055 kWh, costing 986.4 yuan. In comparison, electric heating film usage reached 4,515 kWh, costing 2,167.2 yuan. This means the air-source system saves 1,180.8 yuan annually. It also reduces CO₂ emissions by 706.02 kg per year and avoids air pollution, as it runs on electricity and extracts heat from the air.
In economically developed regions, there is a growing demand for energy-efficient, eco-friendly housing that offers both heating and cooling. The air-source heat pump system has proven its effectiveness after over two years of real-world application, including testing in low-temperature environments. It is now being adopted in many northern Chinese cities as a clean and sustainable heating solution.
Projects have already been implemented in cities like Dalian, Anshan, Beijing, Tianjin, Jinan, Wuhan, and Qingdao. Four of the six main venues for the 2008 Beijing Olympics use this technology, indicating strong market potential. Even in colder regions like Shenyang, the system shows promise and can be further developed. In cold areas, this new energy-saving heating system has demonstrated feasibility and holds significant potential for future expansion.
