Toyota Sequoia Maintenance – Replace Brake Pads
Every vehicle requires regular maintenance to ensure it continues to run smoothly. If you notice your brakes are making an unusual squeaking sound, or you feel like they’re not performing as effectively as they should, it’s probably time to replace them. Here's a detailed guide on how to replace the brake pads on your 2005 Toyota Sequoia.

Is it time to replace the brake pads in your Toyota Sequoia? Follow this guide to get it done.
Replacing Front Brake Pads
To replace the front brake pads, here’s what you need to do:- Start by engaging the parking brake on your vehicle.
- Remove the hub cap cover by locating the notch near the lug nuts and take off the lug nuts.
- Lift the Sequoia using a jack and secure it with jack stands. Remove the tire completely.
- Locate the front brake calipers and identify the three pins or springs. Remove these pins from both sides of the brake pads. Push the remaining pins aside.
- Before taking out the pads, use a flathead screwdriver to push the brake pistons back into the calipers.
- Take out the old brake pads by pulling them out once you’ve moved the pins and springs out of the way. If they're stuck, you may need to drain some brake fluid from the master cylinder.
- Install the new brake pads. Consider applying a brake spray to minimize noise.
- Once the new pads are in place, reinstall the pins and springs.
- Before fitting the tire back on, make sure the rotor is properly aligned with the wheel.
- Put the wheel back on and tighten the lug nuts, starting by hand tightening them.
Replacing Rear Brake Pads
When replacing the rear brake pads, first ensure the emergency brake is off. Also, make sure the front wheels are securely blocked to prevent the car from rolling forward. Then follow these steps:- Locate the notch in the hub cap cover and remove it.
- Loosen or remove the lug nuts.
- Use a jack to lift the vehicle and support it with jack stands. Remove the wheel.
- Find the caliper and unscrew the two bolts located at the back (17 mm bolts).
- The caliper should slide off easily. Carefully place it on the axle. Use zip ties if necessary but avoid twisting or damaging the brake line connected to the caliper.
- Remove the brake pads either by hand or with the help of a screwdriver.
- Install the new brake pads, ensuring they have the same brake indicator tabs as the old ones.
- If you need to compress the pistons, you can use tools such as a screwdriver or a C-clamp along with the old brake pad.
- Reinstall the caliper and tighten the bolts back down.
- Finally, put the tire back on and tighten the lug nuts.
