Tesla Super Factory starts mass production of lithium batteries

  On January 4th, Tesla (TSLA.O) said on Wednesday that the company's Gigafactory in Nevada, a joint venture with Japan's Panasonic (6752.T), has begun mass production of lithium-ion batteries .

The cylindrical "2170 Lithium Battery " is designed by Tesla and Panasonic and will be used in Tesla energy storage products and the new Model 3 sedan. Tesla and Panasonic have long been partners in the battery field.

Tesla said that the super factory will initially produce batteries for the energy storage products Powerwall 2 and Powerpack 2.

The Model 3 is Tesla's first electric vehicle for the mass market, and the super factory is expected to begin producing the battery for the car in the second quarter.

Tesla said it expects the super factory to employ about 6,500 workers during the peak season and create an additional 20,000 to 30,000 jobs in the surrounding area.
