Site Bite: Replacing the coil in a Liebert® condensing unit
**Site Bite: Replacing the Coil in a Liebert® Condensing Unit**
Join Chris Wright, a Chicago-area Account Manager, as he heads out to the P&W Foundry for an urgent service call. The job involved replacing a critical coil in a Liebert® condensing unit that was essential for manufacturing time-sensitive parts for the U.S. Navy. With no room for downtime, Chris and his team rushed to measure the unit on the same day they received the request.
The unit was located on a production floor where every minute counted. The goal was to create a direct replacement coil that matched the original in terms of circuitry, fin density, and piping connections. Despite the coil's large size, it was easily accessible, making the measurement process straightforward.
One of the challenges was the non-standard design of the coil. The copper connections extended from the bottom of the headers, requiring precise alignment for a smooth field installation. Additionally, the flanges were custom-built with extra bends to provide stability on the four pillars supporting the unit.
With detailed sketches and notes, the team customized the new coil to fit perfectly. The customer placed the coil into a 5-day production cycle, and the installation went smoothly. Within a week, everything was back up and running, and the customer was extremely satisfied with the performance and ease of installation.
This real-time account highlights the importance of quick response, precision, and attention to detail in industrial HVAC solutions. It’s not just about replacing parts — it’s about keeping operations running without interruption.
