New home for New Lenox Snorkel
Excerpts from Haixusa.com:
Regardless of where it is, this vintage snorkel fire truck always draws a crowd. The U.S. fire truck served the New Lenox Fire Protection District, located southwest of Chicago, for 45 years, making countless emergency calls and becoming a local legend.

In 2016, Ewald Haimerl, former CEO of HAIX®, bought the New Lenox Snorkel and embarked on an incredible journey to bring it from the U.S. to Germany. The truck traveled 1,200 miles from Illinois to the Port of Charleston, South Carolina. Due to its large size and poor fuel efficiency, the 31-gallon engine required multiple refueling stops, especially during the challenging drive through the Appalachian Mountains. Along the way, it was frequently stopped by police—not just because it moved slower than regular traffic, but also because of its sheer size. Once it reached Charleston, the truck was shipped across the Atlantic to Bremerhaven, where it faced a week-long delay at customs before finally making the 7-hour trip to its new home at HAIX®’s headquarters in Mainburg. After extensive restoration, the vehicle is now fully operational and a proud part of the collection.
The most eye-catching piece in his collection is a GMC pumper, built in 1942, originally commissioned on a U.S. airbase in Sweden. This vehicle is the oldest in the HAIX® Oldtimer Fleet. It served on a U.S. Air Base in northern Sweden for over 30 years before being stored at a used car dealer for a while. HAIX® gave it a second life, and now, with the top open, it's a standout at trade shows and other HAIX® events, drawing attention wherever it goes.
The Ford TK, built in 1949, has been part of the HAIX Oldtimer Fleet since late 2018. Before joining the collection, it was used as a promotional vehicle by an insurance company in Georgia. However, most of the time, people are transported in the Opel Blitz, built in 1965. This small light fire engine, known as the LLF, can carry up to eleven passengers, including the driver.
Besides the four fire engines, the HAIX Oldtimer Fleet also includes two police vehicles, which are considered “Young Timers†due to their relatively recent manufacturing dates. These include a 1995 Chevrolet Impala 300 SS police car and a 1993 Harley Davidson police motorcycle, both of which had unique journeys to Germany.
The Chevrolet Impala was originally used by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) as a backup patrol car before being retired. It was later taken to the Swiss honorary consul in Zurich and eventually ended up at the U.S. consulate in Munich under private ownership before finally arriving at HAIX® in Mainburg. Its comfort and siren are always a hit at local events, adding a nostalgic touch to any gathering.
HAIX® continues to preserve the legacy of vintage and classic fire trucks and police vehicles, with plans to expand its collection in the future!
