A Special Tribute at the Village Board Meeting
Howard Stephens, the retiring Fire Chief of the Mokena Fire Protection District, was honored during the recent Village Board meeting.

On Monday evening, outgoing Fire Chief Howard Stephens received a special recognition from the Mokena Village Board for his decades of dedicated service to the community. Chief Stephens is scheduled to step down on November 30th after more than three decades of commitment to the Mokena Fire Protection District.
Stephens initially joined the Mokena FPD as a part-time firefighter back in 1991. In 1995, he transitioned into a full-time role as one of the district’s first six permanent firefighters and was quickly promoted to lieutenant. By 2002, he advanced to assistant fire chief and later took over as fire chief in 2012.
Throughout his career, Stephens has been deeply involved in various boards and initiatives. He has held positions such as vice chair of the Will County Emergency Telephone Services Board, president of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division 19, and chairperson of the Will County Fire Chief’s Association Labor/Management Committee. Currently, he also serves as vice president of the Mokena Lion’s Club. According to official Village documents, these roles reflect his unwavering dedication to public service.
In the proclamation presented to him, it was noted that “Chief Stephens has built a lasting legacy marked by compassionate leadership, robust organizational frameworks, and a steadfast commitment to advocating for everyone connected to the department. His efforts have ensured that our team and the people we serve will continue to thrive even beyond his retirement.â€
