Lexus and Toyota Avalon Recall Hits Dealership Floors
Starting this week, Toyota is recalling over 400,000 Lexus and Avalon models manufactured in the past decade due to issues with their steering shafts. It was discovered that these components could crack under specific conditions, potentially leading to serious problems. In fact, one reported case showed that the steering column could disengage entirely under certain circumstances. This recall involves around 39,000 2003-2007 model year LX 470s and approximately 373,000 2000-2004 model year Toyota Avalons sold within the U.S., and participation is entirely voluntary.
According to Toyota's official statement regarding the Avalon and Lexus recalls, they explained:
"Due to an issue with the improper casting of the steering lock bar, which is part of the vehicle's steering interlock system, there is a possibility of a small crack forming on its surface. Over time, as the lock bar undergoes multiple lock and unlock cycles, such cracks might grow, ultimately resulting in the bar breaking. If this happens, the interlock system could become challenging to unlock while the car is stationary."
In total, Toyota has recalled about 8.5 million vehicles over the past year. Many believe this increase in recalls reflects improved quality control measures by the company. Alongside these efforts, Toyota is also capitalizing on various sales opportunities for both new and existing customers, signaling significant internal changes within the organization.
Looking back at some recent recalls, it seems Toyota has been quite active in addressing potential issues. For instance, earlier this year, Toyota announced another round of recalls affecting nearly 1.7 million vehicles globally. Additionally, there were concerns over "off-center" steering wheels in certain Lexus models that prompted recalls in South Korea. Meanwhile, other models like the Corolla and Matrix also faced recalls related to specific mechanical defects.
These ongoing efforts demonstrate Toyota's commitment to ensuring customer safety and maintaining trust in their brand. While challenges remain, Toyota appears determined to address any concerns swiftly and transparently. As always, it's crucial for car owners to stay informed about recalls affecting their vehicles and take necessary actions promptly to avoid potential risks on the road.
