College of Dupage wants to build public safety training center
A recent article in The Daily Herald highlights plans for a new public safety training center in DuPage County. College of DuPage representatives mentioned that the closest comprehensive training facility for emergency responders is located in Texas, prompting them to spearhead efforts to establish one closer to Chicago's suburbs.
The proposed Midwest Regional Training Center is designed to serve as an off-campus hub for local, state, and federal agencies, as well as functioning as an emergency operations center during crises. College officials are exploring various locations within DuPage County for this multi-acre site, though specific sites remain undisclosed. The estimated construction cost ranges from $60 million to $75 million.
The facility will include multiple indoor firing ranges with weather simulation and moving targets, a tactical village for practicing shooter and incident response scenarios, emergency vehicle driving tracks, a water rescue zone, a burn tower, an airplane fuselage, and a debris pit. Joe Cassidy, Dean of Continuing Education and Extended Learning at the college, noted that while some individual components of the planned facility exist locally, there is no single location offering such comprehensive resources.
Conversations about the center involve key agencies like the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, and local departments including the Chicago Police Department and railways such as BNSF and Canadian National. A survey sent out to regional police and fire departments received responses from 130 agencies.
Wauconda Fire Chief Dave Dato pointed out that current training opportunities in Lake County are limited, making the proposed center a significant step forward. This initiative follows the 2011 opening of the $30 million Homeland Security Education Center on COD's campus, which houses criminal justice and fire science programs, along with a "4D immersive street scene" and an emergency management center used during the NATO summit.
