College of Dupage wants to build public safety training center
A recent article from The Daily Herald highlights exciting developments regarding a potential new public safety training center in DuPage County. College of DuPage representatives mentioned that the closest comprehensive training facility for emergency responders is located in Texas, prompting them to spearhead efforts to establish one closer to Chicago's suburbs.
The proposed Midwest Regional Training Center aims to serve as an off-campus hub for local, state, and federal agencies while functioning as an emergency operations center during crises. College officials are currently exploring various locations within DuPage County, though specific sites remain undisclosed. Construction costs are expected to range between $60 million and $75 million.
The planned facility will include multiple indoor firing ranges simulating different weather conditions and moving targets, a tactical village for practicing shooter and incident response scenarios, emergency vehicle driving tracks, a water rescue zone, a burn tower, an airplane fuselage replica, and a debris pit. Joe Cassidy, Dean of Continuing Education and Extended Learning at the College, noted that this initiative aligns with recent White House discussions on how community colleges can address growing job training needs. He emphasized that while some components of the proposed center already exist locally, none offer such a comprehensive package.
Key stakeholders involved in these discussions include the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, DuPage County’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management office, the Chicago Police Department, BNSF Railway, and Canadian National Railway. A survey sent out to regional police and fire departments garnered responses from 130 agencies.
Wauconda Fire Chief Dave Dato pointed out that current training options in Lake County are limited, often lacking essential resources. The proposed center would centralize training opportunities for responders across the region. This project follows the 2011 launch of the $30 million, 66,000-square-foot Homeland Security Education Center on COD’s campus. Equipped with advanced features like a "4D immersive street scene" and an emergency management center used during the NATO summit, it supports criminal justice, fire science/EMS, and law enforcement academy programs.
