Chicago 3-11 Alarm fire, 10/12/14

This is a report from Eric Haak: At 1432 hours, we received a call about a structure fire. By 1434, a still and box alarm was activated, followed by a 2-11 alarm at 1443. The fire was located on the fully involved back porches of a two-and-a-half-story wooden building. The flames quickly spread to neighboring structures on both sides and the garage in the alley. The adjacent buildings included a two-and-a-half-story ordinary structure on side D and a one-and-a-half-story ordinary building on side B. The side D structure also had a wooden back porch addition. As the fire intensified, a mayday was called when a crew found themselves trapped by rapidly advancing fire conditions, escalating the alarm to a 3-11. Eventually, another mayday was declared, and two firefighters were transported from the scene in yellow condition. Engine 28 was positioned in sector A, Engine 39 was stationed at the entrance to the alley on Loomis Street, Engine 29 was set up at the corner of Lyman and Ma Benton Lane, and Engine 8 was on Bonfield Street. Tower Ladder 5 was set up but wasn't utilized. Squad 1A was brought into sector A and worked on the attic. I've included some photos taken by Eric Haak that capture the intense firefighting efforts. You can see firefighters scaling ladders amidst thick smoke, working diligently to extinguish the blaze. There are also images showing the aftermath of the fire, with charred remains and firefighters cutting through a garage door to access the source of the flames. For more images, Dennis McGuire, Jr. has generously shared his collection. His photographs offer a closer look at the firefighters in action, capturing their teamwork and determination as they battled the inferno. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by our brave firefighters every day. Their quick thinking and skill under pressure likely saved lives and prevented further damage. It’s humbling to witness such dedication and sacrifice in action.
