2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 11-22-16

Excerpts from NBCChicago.com:

Smoke and falling glass were reported during an extra-alarm fire at the Old Chicago Main Post Office building on Tuesday morning, which ultimately caused a temporary closure of the Eisenhower Expressway. Fire officials confirmed that flames were spreading across multiple floors at 404 W. Harrison St.

This is the second fire to hit the now-vacant building in just two years. The previous incident occurred in November 2014, and it was believed to have been sparked by trains passing beneath the structure.

The United States Postal Service moved out of the building in 1997 when it opened a newer facility. Since then, the old post office has remained unoccupied and has become a target for vandalism and illegal activities.

The fire has raised concerns among local residents and officials about the condition of the abandoned building. While the cause of the current blaze is still under investigation, the repeated incidents have highlighted the need for better security and maintenance of the structure. Authorities are working closely with city planners to determine the next steps for the long-abandoned site.
