Sunan County Uncovers a Cultural Relic Case and Four Criminal Suspects Apprehended

Sunan County uncovered a theft of cultural relics. All four criminal suspects were brought to justice and 25 artifacts were recovered.

On the morning of May 16, 2012, law enforcement officers of the Sunan County Cultural Relics Bureau found that four robbers were digging here during a cultural relic inspection carried out by the Shangaogou Ancient Tombs, a provincial cultural relic protection unit located in the hinterland of the Badan Jaran Desert. In the Han Dynasty, ancient tombs and tomb gangs found that inspectors fled when they were recovering. County Cultural Heritage Bureau law enforcement officers, local township governments and public security agencies actively took measures to quickly mobilize the township stations and individual vehicles to assist in the pursuit of escape. In more than three hours of hunting, three criminal suspects who successfully stolen the ancient tomb were captured. Another suspect was at large. Then the law enforcement officers of the Cultural Relics Bureau and police officers led criminal suspects to conduct on-site identification at the scene of the theft. At the scene of the crime, Luoyang shovels, metal detectors, foods, etc. were used to collect tools used for tombs and excavated. Unearthed 25 bronze artifacts, grey ceramic pots, grey pottery and other cultural relics. One week later, under the close investigation of the public security police officers, the suspect Wei, who was on the run, was brought to justice in Shandan County.

On September 27, 2012, the Sunan County People’s Court held a trial for Weimou and four other people who stole the ancient tombs of provincial cultural relics protection units, and the Sunan County People’s Procuratorate accused the defendant of Weimou on May 14, 2012. Driving his own Mitsubishi off-road vehicle with Chen, Jin, Zhao three people carrying tomb tools, to Sunan County Minghua Township provincial heritage conservation units Shangshanggou Han Tombs group to carry out the excavation of the three ancient tombs. In these two ancient tombs, 25 cultural relics such as gray ceramic pots were dug out. After the incident, the stolen cultural relics were recovered and returned to the Sunan County Cultural Relics Bureau.

The public security agency identified the fierce culprit Wei Jiantang and drove his Mitsubishi off-road vehicle on May 14, 2012 together with defendants Chen Duoyu, Jin Jianguo, and Zhao Jiancheng to carry shovels, ropes, and a large number of household items, and set off from Shandan County. The provincial cultural relics protection unit Shangshanggou Han Tombs in Minghua Township, Sunan County, stole, and welded the “sweeping rods” used to steal tombs. At 18 o'clock, they reached the cemetery and successively took out three ancient tombs. In two of the ancient tombs, 22 pieces of grey ceramic pots, one tomb pendant, one ring, and one half of remaining bronze mirrors were dug up. On May 16, the four suspects were captured by the law enforcement officers of the county cultural relics bureau and police officers, the local government, and the masses who were conducting security inspections.

In response to the above facts, the public prosecution agency provided corresponding evidence and believed that the actions of the four suspects such as Wei Jiantang who had violated the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China should be investigated for criminal responsibility for stealing ancient tombs. In view of the above facts, the people's court in Sunan County sentenced the criminal suspect Wei Jiantang to commit crimes of extorting ancient tombs and sentenced him to ten years of imprisonment with a fine of RMB 10,000. The criminal suspect Chen Duoyu was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for committing the crime of digging ancient tombs. The fine was 5,000 yuan. The criminal suspects Jin Jianguo and Zhao Jiancheng were sentenced to three years and six months imprisonment for the crime of digging ancient tombs, and were fined 5,000 yuan.
