Still & Box + EMS Plan I at O’Hare Airport, 10-28-16

Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune:

A dramatic incident unfolded at O’Hare International Airport on Friday afternoon when an American Airlines flight caught fire during takeoff, leading to the evacuation of 161 passengers and nine crew members. According to reports, the Boeing 767, Flight 383, was en route to Miami when it experienced a sudden problem, prompting the pilot to abort the takeoff just as it was rolling down runway 28R around 2:35 p.m.

The FAA confirmed that the incident began with a blown tire, but American Airlines stated that the decision to abort was due to an engine-related mechanical issue. As the plane came to a stop, emergency chutes were deployed, allowing everyone to evacuate safely from the left side of the aircraft while the right wing caught fire.

A radio exchange between the pilot and air traffic control revealed the urgency of the situation. The controller reported, “American 383… stopping on the runway,” and the pilot responded, “Roger, roger, fire.” When asked if there was smoke or fire, the pilot confirmed, “Yea, fire off the right wing.” The controller then ordered, “OK, send out the trucks.”

About a minute later, the pilot informed the tower, “Chicago, American 383, we’re evacuating.” The response was, “American 383, roger, trucks are on the way.”

Meanwhile, a large piece of metal from the plane crashed through the roof of a nearby UPS facility on the airport grounds before bouncing onto the floor, according to an airport worker. Runways 10L-28R, 10C-28C, and 15/33 were temporarily closed following the incident.

While the fire on the right wing was eventually extinguished, several passengers and a flight attendant suffered minor injuries. American Airlines confirmed that all passengers and crew evacuated safely, though the exact number of injured remains unclear.

As the scene was cleared, a ground stop was implemented at O’Hare until the area was deemed safe for operations. The event has sparked renewed attention on aviation safety protocols and the quick response of both airline staff and emergency crews.

Photos and videos from the incident show the chaos and urgency of the moment, capturing the flames, smoke, and the rapid evacuation of passengers using emergency slides. One video clip, which includes strong language, highlights the tense atmosphere as people rushed to safety.
