Excerpts from ab7chicago.com:
A section of I-355 was temporarily closed on Thursday morning after a small plane made an unexpected emergency landing on the highway near New Lenox. The incident sent shockwaves through the local community and caused major traffic disruptions in the area.
Illinois State Police were quickly on the scene after a white Beechcraft aircraft landed in the southbound lanes of I-355 due to unspecified mechanical problems. The pilot and three passengers—two teenagers and a young adult—were all from Wilmington, Illinois. According to initial reports, all four individuals were taken to Silver Cross Hospital for medical evaluation following the incident.
Of the four people aboard, three are currently receiving treatment for back injuries, while the fourth is also being checked out as a precaution. Authorities have not yet released any details about the cause of the mechanical failure or whether the plane was flying under any unusual circumstances.
The crash site was quickly secured by law enforcement, and crews worked to clear the highway as soon as possible. The event has sparked concern among drivers and residents, who are now more aware of the potential dangers of low-flying aircraft near major highways.
