Shell World's Largest Grease Plant Launches in Zhuhai
Driven by the growing demand for grease in China, Shell 's largest grease plant in the world was inaugurated on January 18, 2013 in Zhuhai. The plant is the world’s 18th grease factory of Shell Group. It mainly produces automotive greases and industrial greases, including lithium-based, lithium-calcium-based and lithium complex greases. The annual output is 30,000 tons. Expansion to 40,000 tons.
The pioneer of grease technology innovation ---- Shell has a long history in the field of grease. Today, Shell's global 18th grease factory was unveiled in Zhuhai to meet customers' increasing demand for grease.
Shell is the largest international lubricant supplier in the Chinese market. Haibo, chairman of Shell China Group, said: "China's demand for lubricants including grease has been growing rapidly. The construction of the world's largest grease plant in China can make us closer to Chinese consumers."

Like all lubricants, the function of grease is to protect the equipment. Unlike lubricating oils, a special thickener is added to the grease so that it stays in the bearings and connection areas for long periods of time. 70 years ago, Shell was the pioneer of grease technology through patented lithium thickener technology. Now, this lithium thickener has become the world's most popular grease thickener.
At present, the total amount of grease consumed each year in the world amounts to more than 1 million tons, accounting for 3% of the total global lubricant consumption. 60% of the grease is used in industrial production, such as manufacturing, metallurgy, mining and power industries. 40% for transportation, such as construction machinery, fleets and passenger cars. Shell grease is also used in Ferrari F1 racing, Boeing aircraft and Shinkansen bullet trains.
The commissioning of the Zhuhai grease plant is part of Shell's investment in a series of lubricant supply chains in Asia. Also in the Shell Zhuhai base, in November 2009, Shell Asia's largest lubricant blending plant was put into operation to provide mainstream lubricant products for South China. In August 2011, Shell's modern Lubricant Technical Service Center was opened in Zhuhai, providing Shell customers and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with technical, marketing and training services. In August 2012, Shell invested in the construction of a large lubricant blending plant in Tianjin.
