Liu Yunshan: The typical name of Weichai was well-deserved
On the morning of March 25, Liu Yunshan, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, secretary of the Central Secretariat, and director of the Central Propaganda Department, visited Weichai for an inspection. During his visit, he praised Weichai’s steadfast commitment to the scientific outlook on development and its continuous efforts to drive growth. He emphasized the importance of media coverage in highlighting Weichai's successful experiences, offering valuable insights for other companies. Chairman Tan Xuguang provided a detailed report on Weichai’s progress to Minister Liu Yunshan. Accompanying the visit were Jiang Yikang, Party Secretary of Shandong Province; Wang Min, Member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; Li Qun, Member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and Director of the Provincial Propaganda Department; and Zhang Xinqi, Party Secretary of Weifang City.
At 9:30 AM, Liu Yunshan and his team arrived at Weichai Power New Area. As soon as they stepped out of the car, Minister Liu greeted Tan Xuguang warmly, saying, "Weichai has done an excellent job. It has long been a model enterprise we have promoted." He added that upon arriving in Shandong, his first stop was Weichai. In the Science and Technology Pavilion, Tan Xuguang introduced the company's history and product status. Liu Yunshan asked several questions during the tour. The Central Propaganda Department has always paid close attention to Weichai’s development experience. From 2006 to 2008, Weichai was selected as a model of independent innovation and one of the top ten state-owned enterprises. Its achievements were widely publicized.
As Liu Yunshan walked through the exhibition hall, he observed historical images showcasing Weichai’s development over the years. He watched with interest as the company's map showed growing prominence and its production lines becoming more advanced. He repeatedly praised Weichai and inquired about its scale, performance, and technological innovations. When he learned that Weichai’s production and sales in March had doubled compared to February and reached a record high, he smiled and said, “Weichai is truly a well-known name.â€
Liu Yunshan also commended Weichai’s global R&D strategy, noting that the company has established six R&D centers both domestically and abroad, keeping up with international standards. He emphasized that despite the impact of the financial crisis, it also presented an opportunity for adjustment for strong companies. Weichai successfully adapted by accelerating structural adjustments, shifting toward a market-oriented approach, and transforming its development model, which helped it overcome challenges and maintain stable growth. This experience, he said, is worth learning from.
He was particularly impressed with Weichai’s corporate culture, especially the three chapters on leadership appointments. Liu Yunshan noted that the cultural strengths of old state-owned enterprises are invaluable spiritual assets that should be properly utilized. He stressed that enterprise culture must be continuously developed, with a people-centered approach, listening to workers' opinions, reflecting their aspirations, and doing practical things that benefit employees.
Before viewing the exhibition on the first Chinese engine with independent intellectual property rights and Euro III emission standards, Liu Yunshan paused for a long time. He carefully examined its performance, output, and market support, calling it a good example of implementing the scientific concept of development. He emphasized the importance of core technologies in energy conservation and emissions reduction and encouraged Weichai to continue striving to enhance China’s position in the global internal combustion engine industry.
At the No. 1 plant, Liu Yunshan inspected the flexible and pilot production lines, gaining insight into the engine’s features and manufacturing process. He observed the fast-paced production environment and modern facilities. Reflecting on Weichai’s 60-year journey, he expressed admiration for the company’s ability to compete globally. He urged Weichai to continue investing in technological innovation, aiming to lead in new technologies and build a competitive edge.
He also took time to review the staff voice column on the wall, praising it for giving employees a platform to express their views and boosting their engagement in business management. He called it an effective bridge between employees and the company.
As he prepared to leave, Liu Yunshan highlighted that Weichai’s healthy and stable growth amid the financial crisis was a commendable achievement. He urged the media to cover this story and emphasized that Weichai serves as a barometer for China’s equipment manufacturing industry. He expressed hope that Weichai would continue to implement the scientific concept of development and set an example for others. Before departing, he shook hands with Tan Xuguang and said, “After visiting Weichai, our confidence in overcoming the financial crisis has grown stronger. We must learn from you!â€
