Landmark building burns in Lyons, 11-22-13
From The Chicago Tribune:
A historic Chamber of Commerce building in Lyons, a western suburb, was severely damaged in a fire that broke out overnight, according to local officials. The two-story structure at 3901 Joliet Ave., once a well-known landmark, was left in ruins after the blaze.
The fire started around 2:30 a.m. and was finally brought under control by 6 a.m. Fire Chief Gordon Nord told reporters that when firefighters arrived, flames were already visible from the first-floor windows. “It really overpowered us,†he said. “We had to pull everyone out and switch to a defensive strategy.â€
Nord confirmed that the building will need to be demolished due to the extent of the damage.
From CBS Chicago:
No one was injured in the early morning fire that destroyed one of Lyons’ most recognizable landmarks. The vacant Chamber of Commerce building at 3901 Joliet Ave. caught fire around 2:30 a.m. It's a two-story ivory-colored structure built in the early 1900s, known for its ornate doorways and castle-like towers.
Although the building had been empty for years, it was still considered a town treasure. According to Fire Chief Gordon Nord, the building still had electricity but gas service had been disconnected for some time. Firefighters spent nearly four hours battling the flames, which spread quickly through the tin ceiling and created large voids that made the job more difficult.
“We had heavy fire coming from the first-floor windows and a lot of heat in the ceiling area. It really overpowered us,†Nord said. “We pulled everyone out and went on a defensive attack.â€
One of the building’s turrets collapsed during the fire. As of Friday morning, the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the damage was so severe that the building will have to be torn down. No injuries were reported.
