This surge in demand has led to a substantial market opportunity for large-scale ethylene equipment, with an estimated market value of around 56 billion yuan during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, and over 63 billion yuan during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan." Zhang Guobao, Deputy Director of the National Development and Reform Commission, highlighted the progress made in the localization of key petrochemical equipment. He emphasized that Chinese manufacturers have successfully absorbed, re-innovated, and developed advanced technologies through collaboration with users. A notable example is the Shenyang Blower Works, which in 2005 supplied a 640,000-ton/year cracking gas compressor for Maoming Petrochemical’s ethylene plant. This achievement marked a milestone, as it demonstrated that China could now produce high-capacity compressors at an international standard, breaking the previous reliance on imported technology. China's progress in developing core ethylene plant equipment has been significant. The research and development of cracking furnaces have seen major breakthroughs, with Sinopec collaborating with U.S.-based Lummus to design and build large-scale furnaces for one-million-ton ethylene projects. Additionally, large-scale ethylene spherical tanks, once entirely imported, are now fully domestically produced, thanks to advancements in materials and manufacturing processes. The successful development of these tanks has ended China’s long-term dependence on foreign suppliers. Another key achievement is the domestic production of the so-called "three-machine" systems—cracking gas compressors, propylene compressors, and ethylene compressors. These critical components were previously dominated by a handful of countries, but Chinese manufacturers like Shenyang Blower Factory and Hangzhou Steam Turbine Plant have now mastered their design and production. This breakthrough marks a significant step toward self-reliance in large-scale ethylene plants. Experts predict that China's ethylene demand will continue to grow rapidly. In 2005, the country's production capacity was about 9 million tons, but by 2010, demand is expected to reach 25–26 million tons, while production capacity would only meet about 55% of this need. By 2020, demand is projected to hit 37–41 million tons, with production capacity covering just 60%. This growing gap highlights the urgent need for more large-scale ethylene equipment. Several major projects are already underway or planned, including the 1 million-ton ethylene project in Zhejiang Zhenhai, the 800,000-ton project in Quanzhou, Fujian, and others across the country. These projects not only boost domestic production but also drive technological advancement and industrial growth. The localization of large-scale ethylene equipment is crucial for enhancing China's core manufacturing capabilities. It has enabled companies like Sinopec to achieve higher levels of equipment localization, leading to improved technical expertise and reduced dependency on foreign suppliers. Furthermore, partnerships between manufacturers and users have fostered innovation and improved efficiency. Despite these achievements, challenges remain. Some key equipment, such as gear assembly centrifugal compressors and PTA oxidation reactors, are still imported. To address this, experts suggest that the government should strengthen support for R&D, encourage technological absorption, and promote the integration of domestic and foreign technologies. Major domestic manufacturers, such as Shenyang Blower (Group) Co., Ltd. and Shaanxi Drum (Group) Co., Ltd., have played a vital role in this transformation. With decades of experience and continuous innovation, they are now leading players in the global market for large-scale industrial equipment. Their success underscores the importance of sustained investment in research, development, and quality assurance. Overall, the development of large-scale ethylene equipment is not only a strategic priority for China’s petrochemical industry but also a key driver of economic growth and technological advancement.
