In the food production industry, metal is one of the most common contaminants found in food products. It can be introduced at various stages of processing due to its widespread use in machinery, handling equipment, and utensils. A food-grade metal detector plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and quality of both packaged and unpackaged goods by identifying metal particles during processing or packaging. Integrated into HACCP programs, these systems help meet food safety standards, retailer guidelines, and legal requirements.
 
Types of Contaminants
Food metal detectors are capable of detecting three main types of metallic contaminants:
Ferrous metals
Non-ferrous metals
Stainless steel, which depends on magnetic or conductive properties
 
The effectiveness of a conventional metal detector in identifying contaminants relies on their conductivity and magnetic permeability:
Ferrous metals are both magnetic and conductive, making them easy to detect.
Non-ferrous metals, while not magnetic, are good conductors and can be detected with ease.
Stainless steel is more challenging to detect as it is typically non-magnetic and has poor conductivity. This difficulty increases when the product is wet or high in salt content.
 
For other contaminants such as glass, calcified bone, ceramics, or stone, an X-ray inspection system would provide better detection capabilities.

Rejection system options:
l        Stop on Detect Reject (up to 50 kg) – conveyor stops and alarms when metal is detected, allowing operators to remove contaminated items.
l        Pusher Reject (up to 10 kg) – pneumatic pushers divert contaminated items out of the production flow.
l         Flap Reject – end flap or lift flap mechanisms are used for dry bulk products. When triggered, they divert contaminated items away from the main flow.
Flow speed: Fixed at 25 m/min or variable between 10–40 m/min.
Flow direction: Left to right or opposite (facing the control panel).
Language support: English, Spanish, Chinese.
