“Get Your Fix” Part 3 of 10: Carrier® 38APS/38APD

The Carrier® 38APS/38APD has made it onto our list of condenser coils with repeated service problems. Introduced in 2012, these units feature Carrier’s Novation® microchannel heat exchanger (MCHX) coils using R-410A refrigerant. The company marketed them as a "robust and cost-effective alternative" to traditional coil designs. While some customers may benefit from lower upfront costs, long-term reliability often suffers due to frequent leaks, damage from foreign debris, and complicated repairs.

Why did Carrier go with microchannel coils?

Microchannel coils offer reduced material use and a smaller refrigerant footprint, which supports mass production and environmental goals. However, this design can compromise durability and ease of repair. Many technicians and users are beginning to question whether the environmental benefits outweigh the maintenance challenges.

Our extensive experience with the Carrier 38APS/38APD led us to develop the microchannel conversion program. Our #changethechannel initiative allows customers to replace all-aluminum fin coils with more durable copper tube, aluminum fin coils. This upgrade improves reliability, simplifies service, and maintains OEM efficiency levels.

We can fabricate copper tube coils that fit easily with minimal re-piping and match the original capacity. These coils require 20–30% more refrigerant and must be charged via sub-cooling, but they eliminate the risk of constant leaks and unreliable repairs. Units are available in dual or single refrigeration circuits for smaller capacities (025–065), while larger models (070–130) only come in dual circuits.
