Addison Fire District news

From the Addison Fire District:

In recent years, protective gear like bulletproof vests and ballistic helmets has become increasingly common among paramedics and firefighters. This shift comes as a response to the growing need for rapid care of shooting victims. Traditionally, police would secure the scene before paramedics and firefighters entered to provide assistance. However, with the rise of active shooter situations, a new approach is being taken.
Now, in a task force response, police and emergency personnel work together to enter an active scene and provide immediate medical care and evacuation. The Addison Fire Protection District is taking proactive steps by equipping on-duty paramedics and firefighters with protective gear that will allow them to safely join these task forces during active shooter incidents.
The district has approved a budget of $16,283 to purchase protective vests and ballistic helmets. These items will be stored on fire trucks and ready for use when needed. "We can no longer afford to be passive," said Fire Chief Joe Leone. "We must act alongside the police and deliver emergency care quickly. We've trained our teams, invested in the right gear, and are now prepared to face this reality head-on."
